Photo Competition 2011/12
Cambridge Student Life: More than just punting?
Our student photography competition for 2011/12 was entitled 'Cambridge Student Life: More than just punting?'. We were looking for images that illustrate all of the different aspects of student life at Cambridge, both day-to-day and particular events or occasions.
The images were shortlisted by a panel of judges including professional photographer James Appleton, the PhoCUS President, Helen Simmons, and representatives from the Cambridge Admissions Office. The winning images were chosen by Director of Kettle's Yard gallery, Andrew Nairne.
Judge's comments regarding the competition overall
The overall standard was excellent, with many of the images capturing the way the changing light illuminates the beauty of Cambridge: its historic buildings, autumn trees or the backs.
It's not easy to move away from images that feel very familiar, such as students cycling to lectures or indeed punting. However the winning image and the two runners up were especially successful at reflecting student life with a sense of focus, warmth and energy.
